More and more people I know are becoming vegan. Some for health or environmental reasons and others for the moral and ethical reasons. What ever their reasons are, the fact is that it is becoming a popular lifestyle for all its benefits.
I think the main reason for this growth in popularity is that fact that we are so exposed to the internet. Because of the internet we can no longer live blindly or say we didn't know.
The great thing about South Africans heading toward this cruelty-free way of living is that it encourages tourism! Other vegans from across the globe are now willing to travel to South Africa because we have a vegan online presence. We are making it easier for them to stay and eat here with sites like Vegan Sa and The SA Vegan Society.
South African Tourism has taken note of this and have partnered with the South African Chefs Association (SACA) to produce a cookbook called, ‘Guide to Vegetarian, Vegan and Jain Dining in South Africa,’ (read more here)
This is a huge progress for the vegan community as this book aims to encourage chefs and hosts to educate themselves about vegan cooking.
Each step made to accommodate vegans in this country is a great one, as it means more people will open up to the idea of living a healthy, animal-free life.
